On 30 June 2025 — the fifth anniversary of the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law — Lady Liberty Hong Kong co-hosted a panel discussion with the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

In his opening remarks, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Mr. Snype said: "As the U.S. and Japan share a responsibility to promote freedom, we can use events like this to amplify the voices calling for democracy."

Panellists included:

Kacey Wong (Hong Kong visual artist): "The Hong Kong government is weaponizing the law. The National Security Law is not a real law — it is a fake law."

Dr. Joseph Lian (Economist)

Joey Siu (Executive Council, World Liberty Congress): "Even in exile, I realized we are never free from Beijing's reach. We are witnessing China's transnational repression deepen and expand."

Teppei Kasai (Program Officer, Human Rights Watch)

Alric Lee (Co-founder, Lady Liberty Hong Kong)

The discussion was followed by a screening of Love in the Time of Revolution, a documentary capturing the courage and resistance of ordinary Hongkongers during the 2019 pro-democracy movement.

For the Hong Kong diaspora and the Japanese public, the event provided a platform to reflect on five years of erosion of freedom in Hong Kong and how the threat of authoritarianism extends across borders.
