Description
Theme & Meaning
Could Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office represent Hong Kong and gather the real HongKongers?
The Radical's deep paint on our physical and spiritual Lennon Wall synchronizes with the Moderate's hoarse chant, forming a confrontation triangle with the emblem of the HKSAR on the closed front door wall. The protesters expose the illegitimacy of sovereignty and representativeness of this fake autonomy—in fact, a real autocracy. Ironically, this forbidden place turns into a protest landmark. It instigates the solidarity among overseas activists. Old and newly immigrated "foreign forces" represent the forbidden voices in Hong Kong.
From scatter to gather, Hong Kong diaspora affirm their ethnicity and nationality as Hongkongers and Localists. Fighting off the guilt of betraying their homeland and comrades with new vision and mission strength, the "deserters" unveil fiercely the banned protest graffiti, upholding firmly the Apple Daily yellow umbrella. At this moment and place, in this scene, it symbolizes Hongkongers' resilient fighting morale with intelligent and brave liberating action.
Background & Situation
An image tells a thousand words. This one-in-a-million work was shot at a crucial moment, 12 June 2019—the outbreak of global protest on the brink of passing the Hong Kong Extradition Bill.
It was a challenge shot at a forbidden place run by the Chinese Communist Party agent—The Hong Kong Economic And Trade Office in Toronto.
The toughest but unexpected happened. BRAVO! This graffiti artist made a decisive action by unveiling his banned and covered masterwork right behind, whilst the speaker in front was distracting the police and the surveillance cameras.
HIGH FIVE! My honour to ink on Hong Kong diasporas' history with this altruistic anonymous hero for defending our rights and freedom of expression on this special Lennon Wall. This humble work presentation is my tribute to this met-by-chance overseas comrade. Be safe, meet you under the Pot, to share our long awaited cheers and the honour of this award!
