Theme: Hong Kong Symbol

2nd Hong Kong Liberty Art Prize 2024

2nd Hong Kong Liberty Art Prize 2024

Building on the success of the first edition — which received over 7,000 public votes and drew more than 1,500 visitors across exhibitions in Taiwan and Japan — the 2nd Hong Kong Liberty Art Prize invited Hongkongers around the world to respond to the theme Hong Kong Symbol (香港象徵).

The main visual of this edition was inspired by the Pottinger Watercolour (阿群帶路圖), an 1846 work depicting early colonial Hong Kong. It was reimagined as a symbolic map of a community in diaspora: a people still navigating, still finding their way.

The theme centred on two keywords: Diaspora and Liberation. Artists were asked to consider: what symbols, icons, and images define Hong Kong — its past, its present, and the home we carry with us?
