Description

At some point, "Hong Kong" became a sensitive word. In Hong Kong, nothing is allowed anymore — things that were once taken for granted have become sensitive. A song frightened certain people so much that they called for it to be banned. Can Hong Kong still make its own voice heard?

Judge's Comment

I chose Candy Li's work as the first-place winner because it precisely renders in physical form a conflict that we ordinarily process psychologically and/or verbally. This raw shift in mode deftly portrays the fear and self-suppression of an individual caught within an unstable political situation, in which certain elements of memory and personal history are being erased. The work successfully and playfully interweaves the symbolic and the sensory, while maintaining an equal relationship with the viewer — that is what sets it apart.
