Unified Stand Against Article 23 Legislation- A Global Call for Action

Content: Unified Stand Against Article 23 Legislation: A Global Call for Action

In a unified response, our organization, alongside 86 others including Hong Kong Watch and Human Rights Watch, condemns the Hong Kong Government’s move to implement Article 23 Legislation, threatening fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong. Announced on January 30, 2024, this legislation proposes outlawing seven offenses under vague terms, risking the penalization of peaceful dissent. Key Concerns and Actions The proposed law could severely impair judicial fairness through extended detentions without charge, limited legal representation, and expedited trials lacking due process. Our joint statement calls for immediate global action: International Denouncement: We urge global leaders to publicly oppose Article 23 and directly address concerns with Chinese and Hong Kong authorities.

Sanctions and Protection: Advocating for sanctions against responsible officials and protective measures for Hong Kong citizens and activists against transnational repression.

Business Responsibility: Companies and chambers of commerce must reconsider their roles and address potential human rights violations.

Urgent Call for Solidarity The enactment of Article 23 represents a critical threat to democracy and human rights in Hong Kong and beyond. We stand with the people of Hong Kong, urging the global community to act decisively in defense of our shared values.
