On June 3, 2024, we had the privilege of hosting the 35th Anniversary Memorial of the Tiananmen Square Incident at the Members' Office Building of the House of Representatives. The event served as a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who stood for democracy in China on June 4, 1989.
Key Highlights of the Event:
Candlelight Vigil: In a moving tribute, candles were arranged to form the numbers "8964," symbolizing the date of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Attendees joined together for a moment of silence to honor the lives lost and the enduring spirit of those who fought for freedom.
Documentary Screening: We screened the impactful documentary "She's in Jail," which highlights the life of Chow Hang-tung, a tireless advocate for free speech. Her story resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the ongoing struggle for democracy and human rights.
Speeches and Attendance: The event saw the participation of around 160 attendees, including Representative Sakurai Shu and a broad spectrum of supporters of Hong Kong's democracy movement from Japan. Their presence emphasized the solidarity between those who continue to fight for freedom in Hong Kong, China, and beyond.
"Goddess of Democracy" Statue: A replica of the iconic "Goddess of Democracy" statue, which became a symbol of resistance during the Tiananmen Square protests, was proudly displayed. This artwork, created by our team, served as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for democratic ideals, even in the face of authoritarian regimes.
This event was not only a tribute to the past but also a call to action for the future. The memory of June 4, 1989, lives on in the hearts of those who continue to fight for democracy in Hong Kong, China, and around the world. We are deeply grateful to all who attended, and we remain committed to keeping this vital history alive.
