The University of Tokyo hosted Hong Kong Week 2023 — Discovering the Realities of Hong Kong — at Komaba International Education Research Building (KIBER), Room 110. The four-day exhibition (17–20 May) was free and open to all.
Over a hundred people visited each day. Beyond Japanese attendees, a significant number of visitors from Mainland China came to show their support. Many shared that, despite having no space to express themselves at home, they continue to attend events that speak up for democracy and freedom, and actively explain Hong Kong's situation to those around them.
We are grateful to the organizers of Hong Kong Week Japan for coordinating a full programme of events and for exhibiting works by a wide range of artists — taking the opportunity to counter the Hong Kong authorities' claim that the National Security Law leaves freedom of speech intact.
Hong Kong's artistic strength cannot be suppressed. Under political oppression, it continues to grow.
