房間 (Room)

房間 is a virtual reality work that reconstructs the rooms of three Hong Kong youth living in Taiwan — the first human rights journalism piece in Taiwan presented in interactive VR form. The viewer enters each protagonist's room alone, becoming at once observer, participant, and role-player, drawn into the private world of young people displaced by the 2019 movement.

The three protagonists cope differently with trauma: one cries alone behind curtains in a dormitory; another falls into seasonal depression and insomnia; a third returned from a summer break as a changed person. Through interactive objects within the VR environment, past trauma resurfaces — a dropped book sounds like gunfire, transporting the protagonist back to the protests.

The work explores why these young people, having fled to Taiwan, struggle to build deep connections and retreat to their rooms as sanctuaries. Illustrative animation sequences reconstruct memories and dreams in panoramic video, immersing the viewer in the weight of sound and image.
